A magical place to learn, play and discover
With an emphasis on creativity and fun, The Toy Maker’s Cottage meets the requirements of Te Whariki, the New Zealand early childhood curriculum, which is founded on these aspirations for children:
to grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators
to be healthy in mind, body and spirit
to be secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society
Our preschool curriculum covers language, creativity, music and movement, science, maths, outdoor exploration, good manners and social skills.
Children also discover the value of growing plants for food and fun, making their own toys and expressing themselves with art.
Every session at the Toymaker’s Cottage includes ‘work time’, when children discover the satisfaction of choosing a task and completing it.
We also have ‘outside time’ so that our little students can find out about nature, gardening, water dynamics and animal care.
Each day also includes ‘story time’, when children can relax and recharge while an accomplished storyteller weaves her word-rich spell.
Our pre-school education concept also embraces the learning philosophies of Montessori and Reggio.
Upstairs children are offered semi-structured learning experiences. They are gently taught how to pay attention, complete tasks and collaborate with each other. There is a special room for storytelling.
Downstairs is a less structured learning environment furnished with hand-made wooden, heirloom and nature-inspired toys. Loose-piece play stimulates creativity and problem solving.
Outside there’s a beautiful garden where children can play in the adventure playground. Nature inspires all kinds of educational experiences here.
